Backpacking
The San Juan Mountains of Southwestern Colorado provide one of the most scenic backdrops for a backpacking trip. The rugged mountains, cascading creeks, open meadows, spectacular wildflowers and abundant wildlife make this the supreme place for a backcountry excursion. This is a great adventure for families or a group of friends.
Discover the Weminuche Wilderness Area - The Weminuche Wilderness is the largest wilderness area in Colorado. The area is named for a band of the Ute tribe who once called this area home and honored the spirit of the land. The Weminuche is home to a diverse collection of mammals including elk, mule deer, black bears, coyotes, marmots, rabbits, beavers, and more.
The average elevation in the Weminuche is 10,000 feet. One advantage of being at a high elevation is that working with maps and compasses is easier since we can see for miles and miles.
